We Are Students First

Republic of Movement (ROM) was started by Sean and Aylin - partners in life and in practice. We are students of Ido Portal, studying with him since 2011 through personal coaching and yearly intensives.

In 2015, we were invited into his official mentorship program, meeting in person multiple times a year. While assisting international workshops, we also received rare mentorship on how to build a community and guide others in movement practice.

Our relationship to our mentor continues to grow. Today, Sean is one of only a few coaches trusted to support Ido’s global student base through his online platform.

We have dedicated ourselves to a lifelong inquiry into what movement truly is, what the body is for, and what it can do. Our studio in Wynwood, Miami is where that inquiry is shared.

Students of 5+ years, continuing to deepen their work

1. Number one: Movement is for everyone

People thrive on challenge. But society feeds us a different message - a message of comfort, of ease.

Because complacency is profitable.

We believe people have an intrinsic desire and potential to grow and transform.

3. The Importance of Work

"We shall do, and THEN we shall understand".

Our mode of work is the Craftsman Mindset: focus on the process, be less concerned with the outcome.

Results are important — not for their own sake, but because they provide a scaffold through which movement and practice can actually occur.

We’re Building A School For Movement Practice In Miami

We’ve built a space to gather together a community of practitioners.

We’re working to transform this space and community into a school. Our goal is to create a reactor where the power of each person’s effort is magnified by the presence of others.

More broadly, we want to elevate the cultural dialogue around physicality, so that deeper connection with the body becomes something people value, seek, and cultivate.

For those who study with us year after year, something happens: their perspective evolves, their relationship to their physicality deepens, and new meaning is found in movement practice.

What We Believe

2. Put Movement At The Center

Look around, and you’ll see two extremes: training that’s too scattered to build anything meaningful, or so narrow it can’t transform movement and carry over into life.

Everything is taught in isolation, nobody is asking better questions, and most take the dogmas of their practice for granted.

Put movement at the center, let it touch everything in your life. Be curious. Be critical. Invest your time and efforts into your development.

4. What is movement?

Movement is NOT simply "motion". The more we study movement, the more we realize how far we are from describing it.

At best, we can say… movement is an ability to respond to a dynamic scenario.

And this is an ability that can be cultivated.

Mover: "Someone who sees beyond the technicalities of each movement pursuit or discipline." (Ido)

Humanity has never come so close to losing itself - the juggernaut of progress is moving so fast, leaving us choking on the dust of a modern existential crisis.

Who are we, who do we want to be?
